The rentista category is for foreign nationals who support their stay in Argentina with income from assets they hold abroad, not with a salary. It is not the same as being able to afford to live here: the authority looks at the source, regularity and proof of the income. This page summarises the official framework; it does not tell you whether you qualify, and it is not financial or legal advice.
What counts as rentista income
According to the official pages of the National Migration Directorate (DNM), the income must come from assets such as financial instruments, real estate, company shares or other assets the DNM accepts. Income from your own work does not qualify. The entry-permit page describes a stable monthly income, paid for at least two years, of no less than five times the minimum living wage (Salario Mínimo Vital y Móvil, SMVM). The legal basis cited is article 23(b) of Law 25.871 and Decree 616/2010. Official page: entry permit as rentista or pensioner.
Freelance invoices, a monthly salary or payment for services you perform yourself are not the same kind of income. Pensioners follow a related but separate category based on a pension; the same official page covers both.
Stage 1: the temporary entry permit
- The application is filed through an attorney holding a power of attorney with sufficient powers, with an application letter signed before a DNM officer and a complete copy of the passport.
- For rentistas, a certificate from the entity transferring the funds, confirming that the income comes from the sources the page lists (for example foreign bank investments, remittances from foreign financial institutions, or investments in foreign companies).
- Foreign documents must be legalised and translated, and the DNM may ask for further evidence.
- Once the DNM decides, the applicant can go to the Argentine consulate to obtain the visa.
Stage 2: extending the residence in Argentina
The separate extension page describes the renewal of a temporary residence as rentista. It asks for a valid passport or ID, the Argentine criminal record certificate for applicants over 16 (obtained through the online system), proof of address and proof that the rentista income continues at five times the SMVM or more. The procedure starts in RaDEX, the extension is granted for one year, and you must be in Argentina. Official page: extension as rentista. The entry-permit page mentions a longer period of up to three years, so confirm the duration that applies to your stage with the DNM.
Before you decide
- Check which stage you are in, because the procedures and documents are different.
- Ask your bank or the paying entity whether it can issue the certificate in the form the DNM expects, before restructuring any investments.
- The SMVM changes; look up the current figure instead of relying on a number from an article.
