Living in Buenos Aires: housing and first steps

Housing, location and first expenses are best decided as part of one plan. Start from your usual activities and your total budget, then compare alternatives. This guide does not promise availability and does not recommend signing a contract without reviewing its conditions.

Initial accommodation and long-term rental

Initial accommodation can give you time to learn the routes and visit properties. To compare it with a long-term option, ask in writing what the amount includes, the duration, the deposit, utilities and the exit conditions. A published rate does not always represent the full cost.

Choose the neighbourhood around your routine

  • Calculate the journeys to your place of study or work.
  • Assess access to transport, shops and the services you would use every day.
  • Visit the area at different times of day when possible.
  • If you are moving with children, include the school routine and family needs.

Guarantees, deposits and other costs

Ask which guarantee the other party accepts and what documentation it requires. If a surety insurance (seguro de caución) is offered, request its conditions, cost and scope before taking it out. Keep deposit, move-in costs, utilities and any commission separate; do not assume that one condition applies to every property.

Before you transfer money

  • Confirm the identity of the other party and their authority to offer the property.
  • Verify that the property exists and do not rely on photographs alone.
  • Read the contract and the refund policy before paying a reservation.
  • Ask for a receipt and keep the advertisement and all communications.

For a transaction that requires a licensed professional, turn to the appropriate professional. Pressure to pay immediately is a reason to stop and verify.

The first days

Draw up a list covering accommodation, arrival transfer, connectivity and essential journeys. Leave room to deal with errands without depending on everything being done on the first day. Costs must be confirmed with each provider; this page does not set prices or guaranteed timelines.
